About BVRS

Founded in 1958, the Blackwater Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad provided Fire and EMS protection to the southern most areas of the City of Virginia Beach. Today, under the leadership of Captain Greg Smith, Rescue 13 provides EMS services to a predominately rural section of the city.

As part of the largest all-volunteer based EMS system in the nation, Captain Smith is leading the way for growth and development of one of the smaller squads in Virginia Beach. Captain Smith is quick to point that rescue calls in 'the county' are often the most challenging, maximizing the impact that volunteers can have on the outcome of emergency situations.

For those who desire even more action, the Rescue 13 volunteer crews will often post 'uptown' during the evening hours providing much needed coverage to the more urban portions of the City and providing the crews with some excitement before returning to the station for a good nights sleep.

Captain Smith and the members of Blackwater Volunteer Rescue Squad invite people living or working in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk and Eastern North Carolina to step out of their comfort zone and into the hot zone of volunteers saving lives and join a station where every member counts - Blackwater Volunteer Rescue Squad!
